the fifth of anything

you're getting older. nevermind, you don't care about the ease of that truth--you're not growing older. heck, you're not even growing. something about that extra year and nothing to show for it makes you want to take the tip of your finger and find the head of that candle and push it into that frosted quicksand as if you were trying to hide something. it doesn't work; you can't hide the hole where a candle once was. forget it! well, maybe you can...if you allow your eyes to swing like a pendulum and when everyone else's eyes are pinned to the balloon that just popped, you take that busy finger and fill in that hole with sugar. it was already there, just beside the hole, now in it. what hole? well, maybe you made somewhat of an improvement from last year because, now, you just don't care anymore.

"There is no old age. There is, as there always was, just you."
